The Meaning of Christmas By Tammy Nicole Glover

“For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NIV

Christmas time tends to be full of joy and excitement. Brightly colored decorations are everywhere and the stores are full of people trying to find the perfect gift. Sometimes, it can become a bit overwhelming and people become stressed out. We lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas and then the holiday and everyone who celebrate it come under scrutiny.

Christmas is not about decorations or presents that cause us to go into debt. It’s also not about cookie exchanges or Santa. It doesn’t even matter that it’s not the actual date of Christ’s birth.

Christmas is about a very special gift sent by God, His Son Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. This gift continually gives and it is passed down from generation to generation.  Christmas is about taking time out to remember, rejoice and be thankful for this precious gift. There is no other perfect gift than God sending His only Son in order that we might have salvation.

The true Christmas spirit should live in our hearts all year round. Sure, decorations, giving presents to each other and gingerbread houses are fun but these things should never overshadow the true meaning of this season. God gave the world His Son, that Son bore our sins, died on the cross and rose from the dead for our salvation.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV
